The media property that shows
elements of media convergence is the children’s movie Frozen. I have chosen this particular media text for my media
convergence project a few reasons. When I was younger I loved all the Disney princesses,
I watched all the movies countless times and wished I was one of them. As I got
older, I eventually grew out of the princess phase, but still was a huge fan of
Disney animated movies When the movie Frozen first came out in theatres, I was
immediately excited to go see it, due to the fact it was animated. After watching
Frozen, it quickly became to be one of my favorites. When I was assigned this
media convergence project I decided to pick Frozen because this modern movie
combines two things that I loved as a child.
Frozen
is a computer animated musical film, produced by Walk Disney Animation Studios and
released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2013. This children’s film tells a
fictional story of two sisters, Queen Elsa and Princess Ana, living in the town
of Arendelle. Older sister Elsa, has special powers in which she has kept a
secret from everyone, including her little sister Ana. On the day of their coronation,
Elsa loses control of her special powers and accidently freezes Arendelle, creating
an eternal winter. Not knowing what to do, Elsa runs away. Now, it is up to Ana
to now venture into the blizzard to seek out Elsa in order to save her kingdom
and stop the infinite winter. Along her journey, Ana meets a friendly snowman
named Olaf, a pet reindeer named Sven and his owner Kristoff, a mountain man who
Anna eventually falls in love with. Together, they face the many obstacles and
challenges. For example, Prince Hans, a man who wants to take over Arendelle, freezes
Ana completely solid. Quickly Elsa then runs to her frozen sister’s side and
hugs her. The action of Elsa hugging Ana suddenly thaws her saving her life. Now
realizing that Elsa’s powers can be controlled by love, she ends the eternal
winter, saving her Kingdom.

Along with a great story line and catchy
songs, Frozen also has some underlying messages. For example, your actions can
affect others, you have to learn self control, the power of sacrifice and don’t
judge a book by its cover. Some of the main themes that are present in Frozen
are are fear, loneliness and love. These themes are present throughout the
entirety of the film.
Frozen demonstrates many elements
of media convergence. Since the movies main audience is young children, most of
the media convergence target audience is centered around kids. For example,
Frozen have a lot of cross promotion, including, different books, Frozen themed
dolls and toys, themed clothing, etc. This media convergence also is
demonstrated in more technological aspects, for example, a music soundtrack, a website
including online games and activities, video games, multiple apps for phones
and tablets, a short sequel to the movie entitled “Frozen Fever” along with “Frozen
2” that will be released in 2019. Frozen also has media convergence that
takes place on a larger scale, for example, an ice skating show “Disney Frozen
on Ice,” a Broadway musical “Disney Frozen,” and Frozen attractions at Epot in
Disney World.
